It’s undoubtedly happened to us all at one time or another. We jump on the diet plan bandwagon and lose some weight, only to watch as the kilos mound back again further down the track. Or maybe we start a diet plan all gung-ho, but a couple of weeks later find ourselves not being able to keep on the straight and narrow; we start reaching for that sugary treat or that next glass of wine again. But sticking to a diet plan doesn’t have to be hard. Some diet plans make it easy. If you are struggling, however, don’t fret it. Here are our top tips and techniques on how to stick to your diet plan.
Change the way you think
Firstly, you need to reframe the notion that you are on a diet. This implies that how you are eating now is simply temporary – a short term view that does not actually involve you changing the way you eat. Instead, adopt the mindset that this is how you will be eating moving forward in the future. It’s easier to do this if you recognise that how you were previously eating was not working for you. It may not have been working for you for any number of reasons including:
- It’s led you to being overweight
- You feel unhealthy
- You’re suffering from weight-associated health problems
Focus on what you can have
One small but really significant mindset change is to focus on the concept of ADD and not MINUS. This means focus on what you can have rather than what you cannot. Refrain from thinking and using language such as:
- “I can’t eat this or I can’t drink that”
And use language instead such as:
- “I can eat this and I can drink that”.
If you constantly focus on what you can’t have, you’ll feel like you are missing out and are more likely to fall off your diet plan program. Effective diet plans should have lots of yummy recipes and food options that make adopting this positive mindset as easy as possible.
Create healthy habits
A great tool to help support you in sticking with your diet plan program are habit tracking apps on your phone. By establishing healthy habits, you’re more likely to stay on track now, and also in the future once you complete your diet plan. There are a lot of apps out there that can help you get started with creating healthy habits. We cover 3 great ones in this blog post. The key is to choose just one or two things that you would like to focus on. Start simple and then work your way up. Some good healthy habits to start with could be:
- Drink more water
- Reduce your alcohol consumption
- Snack on fresh fruit instead of highly processed foods
